  8.     David Lynch is an industry these days. America's most
  9. distinctive moviemaker had directed just four features
  10. (Eraserhead, The Elephant  Man, Dune and Blue Velvet) in a
  11. 15-year career, but now he's everywhere. His Twin Peaks brought
  12. flaming weirdness to prime-time television. He has directed TV
  13. commercials and a 25-minute music video. This fall he is
  14. co-producing a documentary series for the Fox network. And
  15. here's Wild at Heart, another three-ring freak show that won
  16. the top prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival and serves as
  17. an entertaining anthology of Lynch oddities.

  19.     Wild at Heart begins with the moody Sailor (Nicolas Cage)
  20. bashing a black man's head into pulp. And Sailor is the good
  21. guy in this storm-sky fresco of two crazy kids on the run.
  22. Sailor and his girlfriend Lula (Laura Dern) hightail it to New
  23. Orleans and Texas, where they encounter fat-lady porn stars and
  24. a slick psychopath (Willem Dafoe) who loses his head, literally
  25. and spectacularly, in a bank heist. To Barry Gifford's source
  26. novel Lynch adds a murder plot, an Elvis impersonation, a few
  27. torture scenes, a drug cartel, some cockroaches and a happy
  28. ending complete with deus ex machina. Not to mention frequent
  29. references to The Wizard of Oz, with which Wild has precisely
  30. nothing in common.

  32.     This handsome, volcanically violent road movie is Lynch's
  33. first flat-out comedy; he and his ensemble (including Diane
  34. Ladd and Crispin Glover) work at high pitch and have a swell
  35. time at it. Wild at Heart is also the first Lynch film in which
  36. his motives -- to hang a haberdashery of bizarre incidents on
  37. the merest hook of plot -- are apparent. You might go, "Ick!"
  38. but you won't ask, "Huh?" What's lacking is the old sense of
  39. delicious, disturbing mystery. Wild at Heart reveals a master
  40. of movie style on his way to becoming a mannerist.
